GEOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK

 Dear Geographers,

Welcome to the 2004 GEOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK (GAW) celebrated from November 14th-20th.  This year’s theme is “Cultures: The Sound of Place.”  The National Geographic Society’s website http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geographyaction/ has been created for educators to interact, get new ideas, materials, and activities, ask questions, and even obtain feedback concerning your Geography Action! work.  Teachers can host a live chat or participate in discussions, and collaborate with others.

In addition, the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance has created a daily designation to help stimulate your students to celebrate GEOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK.

MELODY MONDAY                  Encourage your students to list songs of places in America

such as Kansas City (Wilbert Harrison), Honolulu Lulu (Freddie Cannon), California Dreamin (Mamas & Papas),

Massachusetts (Bee Gees), and Blue Hawaii (Elvis) and locate them on a map.

TUNES TUESDAY                            Extend their song list to world wide places such as

Winchester Cathedral (New Vaudeville Band), Bangladesh

(George Harrison), Waterloo (ABBA), Next Plane to

London (Rose Garden), April in Paris (Count Basie).

WEAR IN WEDNESDAY                      Encourage your students to wear tee shirts depicting a place

                                                            that is special to them.

.EXPLORATION THURSDAY Invite your students to explore the world of musical instruments and/or dances to discover the inventors/creators and the places in the world where these inventions took place.

ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY Invite your students to colorfully illustrate something of note within your community on the attached musical note form.

Please select five of these notes about your community, fill out the Massachusetts Survey on the back of the musical note form and mail to:
