Massachusetts Geography: a Changing Landscape over Time

A workshop for Grades 3-5 Teachers and Others

at the Global Studies Center   Winchester Public Schools

Saturday Oct 17, 2009   9:15am - 12:15pm

Through a slide presentation by a noted New England author, and a wide range of hands-on activities, this workshop will integrate Massachusetts history with the geographic theme of human-environment interaction, focusing on the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir.  The Quabbin once was a low-lying valley surrounded by rugged hills.  The valley was drowned to create the Quabbin, and the towns in the valley were gone forever under the rising water. Come and learn some of the exciting strategies that can be used to bring this topic into your classroom, while making a connection to the Learning Standards in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

Featured Presenters:

Michael Tougias is the award-winning author of Quabbin: A History & Explorers Guide and 19 other books on New England history and geography, including books on King Phillip’s War, and shipwreck disasters off the New England coast. Note: Michael will bring many of his books for sale and autographing. .
