European Explorers in the Age of Discovery A workshop for Grades 4-5 Teachers and others at the Global Studies Center, Winchester Public Schools Saturday Oct 24, 2009 9:15am -12:15 pm
|
Through the use of short content talks and hands-on activities, this workshop will integrate history and the 5 themes of geography by focusing on the European explorers of the 15th-17th centuries, and the lands and waters they encountered. What kinds of geographic obstacles did the explorers overcome to reach distant lands? How did the explorations lead to an exchange of products between the “New World” and the “Old”? In what ways did the explorations reshape the human and physical world? Throughout the workshop, clear and specific connections will be made to the Learning Standards in the Massachusetts Social Studies Curriculum Frameworks.
Featured Presenters: Vernon Domingo is a geography professor at Bridgewater St. College, and the co-coordinator of the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance. Kathy Babini, K-12 Social Studies Coordinator, Plymouth Public Schools, is a National Geographic Society–trained teacher consultant, and has conducted numerous geography workshops at the state and regional level.
