The Massachusetts Geographic Alliance and the Massachusetts Global Education Program present

World Regional Geography

From Location to Region:

Using the Five Themes to Navigate Earth

A workshop for Grades 6-7 teachers and others

at the Global Studies Center, Winchester Public Schools

Saturday March 29th 2008    9:15am-12:15am

Studying the “whole world” can be an overwhelming task for any student!  Teaching world geography can be an overwhelming task for any teacher!  When used frequently and creatively, the five themes of geography: Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, and Region are essential tools that assist students in organizing the multitude of geographical information about the Earth and its people.  This workshop will offer a wide variety of hands-on activities and technology-based projects designed to enhance the study of world geography and equip students with a broad understanding of how to study, organize, and place “the whole world in their hands”. The presentation will also make a clear connection to the World Geography topic area in the Massachusetts Social Sciences Framework.

Featured Presenter:

Janice Fairchild has taught World Regional Geography at Hanscom Middle School, Hanscom AFB, for 24 years. In 2001, The Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies presented Janice with its Global Educator of the Year Award. A frequent presenter at state & regional conferences, she has also been a semifinalist in the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year Award program.
